Are you a patient person? If you can master patience, the journey of life will run so much more smoothly.
Simply put, being patient is your ability to tolerate and persevere when things get tough. It means you can stay calm under stress and wait without becoming annoyed or anxious.
If you want to become successful in all areas of your life you should make every effort to become a more patient person. It will improve your decision making skills, help with your relationships and reduce mental stress.
1. Understand & Counteract Your Triggers
Impatience is something that is triggered. This trigger is different for everybody - it could be specific people, words or situations. Make a list of the things that cause you to become impatient. If you're having trouble identifying your triggers, stop and think about the last time you felt this way. What caused it?
If you're not sure, ask your friends, family or co-workers about your impatience. Chances are, they know what gets you "wound up."
Try to keep a journal (even just in the notes app on your phone) to record when you start to feel impatient. Write down the details of the situation and why you're getting frustrated. This can help you understand what you're feeling and examine your actions in response.
You won't always be able to avoid the triggers that make you impatient but you can learn to manage your reactions to them.
2. Increase Your Self-Confidence
Impatience usually rears its ugly head when you feel let down or when you don’t feel in control or perhaps feel that your hands are tied. You want something to happen now, but you can't seem to do anything to speed things up. A person with a high level of confidence will accept the situation as it is; they will not fight it or rail against it. Rather, they will work with it.
In life, you have to pick and choose your battles. There are times you must take a stand and travel against the current, but in most day to day moments, it's not just healthier but also much easier to go with the flow of things and have the confidence to deal with life as it happens.
3. Put a Positive Spin on Things
Patience is all about perspective and how you look at situations.
For example, if you miss your bus don't focus on the negatives but emphasise the positive things such as you'll get exercise from walking or that you can enjoy the fresh air while you wait for the next one. So try to put a positive spin on everything you do; you will find that you will not just reduce stress but you'll become a much happier person.
Always turn a negative situation into a positive situation. ― Michael Jordan
4. Release Tension and Stress in Healthy Ways
In most cases, impatience is the release of pent up stress, tension, and anxiety. Say you had a long day at school or work that's left you feeling stressed out. You end up 'absorbing' the stress and this makes it easier to be triggered when something sparks your impatience.
There are many ways to release pent up stress and anxiety. Some of the best methods include:
Short meditation or spending time in prayer
Doing breathing exercises
Mindfulness - checking in with yourself during the day to track how you feel, why you feel how you feel, what is triggering any negative feelings and being compassionate to yourself and treating yourself with love. Use this time to help yourself like you would a really close friend who has had a tough day.
